New Houses, Same Neighborhood
"Education is the backbone of any successful community. It matters not how much you repair a place if the people who will inhabit it have no education. They will just turn to various forms of crime and end up destroying everything that was created." - Darnell Gardner of Detroit, MI.
Highland Park is a city in Michigan, located inside of Detroit (it's borders are all completely surrounded by Detroit), making it a small city within a major city. It's spreads throughout a little less than 3 square miles. Highland Park's most proud moments were during the early 1900's, when it Henry Ford opened the Highland Park Ford Automotive Plant.
"Ford Motor Company closed the Highland Park plant in the late 1950s, and in the late decades of the 20th century the city experienced many of the same difficulties as Detroit - declines in population and tax base accompanied by an increase in street crime. White flight from the city accelerated after the 1967 Detroit 12th Street Riot. The city became heavily black and impoverished by the 1980s" (wikipedia).
If you put too many ignorant black people, aka niggas, in a good area so that the race makeup of that area becomes over 90% black, they could turn Hampton, NY into the 80's version of South Central, Los Angela's. Well, that's what happened in Highland Park.
Here we are, on a summer-like day, in mid-April 2008. Highland Park, much like it's father city, Detroit, is facing a small tax base, a decline in population (especially among middle class citizens), and high crime rates. Despite all these negative facts, investors and community groups still try to bring back forgotten areas in the city. For that, I applaud them.
Unfortunately, unless you get citizens who care about their environments in these new housing developments, the homes will become much like some of the citizens in them, hopeless. I took it upon myself to drive to one of the areas in Highland Park where public dollars were used to develop starter homes for first-time home buyers. Here's what I found:

High gas? Gimme a break
I've made up my mind that the United States is full of WINERS. Yes, I said it, WINERS. People like to complain about stuff. Most of the time, it's not stuff that really affects their lives, like why the Patriots or Kwame Kilpatrick "cheated."The latest slew of complains is about high gas prices. GIMME A FREAKING BREAK.
Gas is not high. When gas is $20 per gallon, then it will be high. Gas is high if you want to compare it to what it used to be 3-4 years ago, heck, if even 6 months ago, but it's not high in the big scheme of life.
What's high? The price of a Lamborghini is high. The price of iphones are high. The price of 60" inch plasma tv's are high. Gas? Not even close.
Take a trip to your local mall and see how many CARS are in the parking lot. Cars run off gas, well most of them. If gas was SO HIGH, the parking lots would be empty. The parking lots of every bar, strip club, and regular club is full.....EVERY WEEKEND NIGHT in Detroit. GAS IS NOT HIGH!!!
The freeways are PACKED during rush hour. If gas was so high, the bus stops would be SUPER crowded, but they're not.
When the price of something is too high, you go without it. The $200,000 condos in midtown Detroit are priced too high, thus they sit EMPTY for months and months. The gas stations have not seen a lack of business since the "black out" a few years back.
So people, stop complaining about how high gas is, when you just went to go meet your secret lover at a hotel 25 miles away.

Something Positive For Once
As I sat in my apartment working on one of my websites, I felt rumbles so deep that they began to shake my windows. I hurried to the entrance in the back to make sure we weren't under another "terrorists" attack. To my delight, a big yellow bull-dozer was the culprit. A bull-dozer that was tearing down the abandoned building that sit next to a apartment building in midtown Detroit.
My grandmother told me years ago that "suburban white folks will come back to Detroit." That was maybe back in the mid to late 90's. It's 2008 and I see it happening right before my eyes. If you take a look above, you will see a picture will a small group of people gathered around watching the bull-dozer go to work, armed with IPhone's and digital cameras. That small group of people are residents of this neighborhood, whom happen to be white. I find it rather strange that a 23-yr old black student and 6 white people, are the only ones who chose to celebrate this victory. When a car drives by with loud bass, you can see a good 40 people peaking out of their windows, but when this happens....nobody cares. Now we see who really cares about their communities.
The removal of this building is very important because bums and drug addicts used it to hang up and further decrease the value of this area. A few days ago, a neighbor, her friend, and I sat on the back deck staring at this building. While I cited the building as one of the reasons I need to hurry up and get to Royal Oak, she brought up the fact that we live in such a great location, it's almost a bad choice to move. I agreed.
The physical location, minutes away from Wayne State, any major freeway, Tiger Stadium, Ford Field, and the now permanent casinos, is a gold mind. We live minutes away from Hart Plaza and the Detroit River. It's not where you live though, it's who lives there with you. I've had my car broken into once, resulting in a loss of a thousand dollar car stereo. I've had my apartment robbed twice, resulting in the loss of over four-thousand dollars worth of goods. That alone would have made almost everyone I know move within the next week, but I chose to stay. Perhaps the great price on rent and the short commute to work and school played a role in my decision to not act quickly. To this day, I say I want to move to the suburbs, but I'm still here.
As we talked about the pros and cons of midtown Detroit, I saw a body moving about in the abandoned structure. A few seconds later, I watched as a man walked through the alley into the backyard of building. He walked up some stairs and to my surprise, sat down in the building. Then one of my neighbors pointed out that there was a man upstairs moving about. Keep in mind here that I'm talking about the same building that is in the pictures above, just 3 days ago.
Abandoned buildings are safe havens for crime. Living in the Cass Corridor for over two and a half years though, has taught me that not all homeless people are drug addicts or bad people for that matter, they're looking for somewhere to go. Unfortunately, there can not be growth in my neighborhood with the significant homeless and drug addict population. And, wherever you have drug addicts, you have drug dealers. Wherever you have drug dealers, you have crime...alot of it. Even with the police department's Central District located less than 3 minutes away, out right drug deals go on at the few liquor stores we have in this area. Funny that given the amount of alcohol white people drink, that is just my view based on the white people I know, that in predominantly white communities, there are rarely any "liquor" stores in neighborhoods. All the while, Detroit has more liquor stores and gas stations than it has working street lights.
Is this the work of Kwame Kilpatrick's neighborhood initiative? I think not. But who cares? My building manager credits Mario's Italian restaurant, that is just a block away, for pushing this building to be demolished. The building has been on the demolishing lists for a few years and several of my co-tenants say that Kilpatrick is pushing things to get done in the city due to his current legal and political image issues. Perhaps something good can come from something bad.
There are 4 or so new housing developments currently going on in my area. The town homes medium price range is around $200,000 and those are the cheaper units I've seen. I've read about several tax breaks and discounts available to people who buy property in these "empowerment zones." The Calumet community just a block away, which used to house Section 8 residents, is now turning into a regular rent based town house community. Sadly enough, when they push out the Section 8 residents is when they begin to remodel the entire community. I've seen new roofs, appliances, sinks, toilets, and windows all being brought in for what will be the new phase of tenants. Do I blame them? No. You can say that is my honest opinion that black people don't know how to take care of anything.
I don't believe in the success of a black city. I believe in the success of a diverse city. Filled with black, white, arab, mexican, and any other race or culture of residents who want to see their city shine. The type of residents who pick up trash and call the police when they see suspicious activity. The type of residents who go to city council meetings. The type of residents who pay taxes, go to their children's parent-teacher conferences, and don't create havoc in the streets. Detroit has those type of residents now, and they're black, my problem lies not with them, but their children and neighbors who embrace and celebrate the current titles Detroit holds: the most violent city in America and the lowest graduation rate in America.
Despite all of the negative stories and views I could give on Detroit, the removal of this abandoned building is a great thing...one great thing for the caring residents of the city. With every abandoned building torn down, Detroit is one step greater to become the gorgeous city it once was. I will use this as motivation for me to get off my lazy butt and go do something to make my neighborhood a cleaner place.

I'm a ......amateur photographer if you will, so for the past 2-3 years I've been taking pictures of everything in this city. With the Detroit's Free Press recent story about the state of the city, I'd just like to share some of the photos I've taken. Some good, some bad......but all real.

Undercover sting nets $300,000 in suspected stolen & counterfeit merchandise
Dearborn men allegedly fenced TVs, knock-off clothing at 2 Detroit stores
Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputies and Prosecutors, along with investigators for the Macy’s department store and other local police agencies, have shut down a major fencing operation, Sheriff Warren Evans and Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced today. They say that employees at two Detroit stores had been purchasing goods stolen from Macy’s for pennies on the dollar then reselling them along with counterfeit items at their own small independent locations in Detroit.
Last week, deputies raided “Da Hook Up” and “Good Fellas,” two clothing stores where they recovered more than $300,000 worth of stolen and counterfeit items. At the time of the raid, investigators arrested store employees Mohammed Ali Aoun, 22, and his brother, Ibrahim Abdul-Hussein Aoun, 35, both of Dearborn.
“For most people, the Holiday season is a time of unselfish giving. Unfortunately, for these two men, it is a time of selfish greed,” Evans said. “Not only were they promoting shoplifting from larger stores, they were selling their own customers knock off products at name brand prices.”
Seized in a raid at the Good Fellas store Wednesday were 11 large screen televisions the brothers had just purchased from an undercover sheriff’s deputy for $3,000 - after the officer had stated the TVs were stolen. Also seized was nearly $80,000 in suspected stolen merchandise from Macy’s, along with two semi-automatic 9mm handguns.
Seized from inside Da Hook Up was 1,792 pair of counterfeit NIKE brand shoes with a retail value of approximately $161,280.00, along with numerous boxes of counterfeit clothing with a retail value of approximately $59,000.00 and one handgun.
Investigators from a Wayne County task force that also includes the police departments of Harper Woods and the five Grosse Pointe communities and National Insurance Crime Bureau, were acting on a tip that individuals who shoplifted from Macy’s stores in the area were bringing the merchandise to the Aoun brothers. According to tipsters, the brothers would purchase the items for pennies on the dollar then sell them at a substantial markup.
After the undercover officer made his first sale to Mohammed Aoun, the officer received a call from him, providing the officer a “wish list” of additional items he wanted him to bring next time, Evans said.
Among the items stolen from Macy’s and recovered during the raid was designer clothing and cologne. Investigators are trying to determine whether the owner of the store was directly involved in the fraud.
Both brothers have been charged with Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property and Possession/Sale/Distribution of Counterfeit Merchandise and have been released on bond.

EASTPOINTE, Mich. -- Eastpointe police used a battering ram to break down an apartment door and arrest a woman they said grabbed food from a pizza delivery man but failed to pay him.
Jessica Gray, 19, was arrested after she and the occupants of her apartment refused to pay for a delivery of pizza, ribs, chicken, shrimp and a soda.
Police said the tab was $17.18.
According to police, Gray answered the door when a 21-year-old delivery man arrived at her apartment about 7 p.m.
They said Gray took the meal, then slammed the door and joined four other female occupants inside in yelling insults and threats.
She was charged with FELONY LARCENY .
Homeowner J. Greer said Gray is "no longer welcome in her home". Other witnesses in the home say that the police drew guns on the females, had all of them laid out in the hallway, etc....

1. Is this really a FELONY? A $20 theft for a pizza?
2. Did the apartment renters DOOR really need to be busted down to talk to the occupants? This WAS not a hostage situation.

If you have "Undercover Freak" on your page, doesn't that mean that you're not undercover anymore? I mean, it's just common sense.....right? If I put, "low-key drug-dealer" on the internet for everyone in the world to see......I'm not really being a low key drug dealer anymore, or am I? Real undercover freaks are just that...undercover. The only people that find out that they are freaks are the people they do freaky things with. If you girls were police officers, you'd get fired very quickly.
Oh yea, yall girls that have ur ass out in your pics, in a dirty ass room...ARE DISGUSTING. Clean your house!!! Wash those dirty ass walls, nobody wants to see stains and fingerprints behind you. Come on now, now matter how thick u are, nothing is sexy about dirt. It's just NOT natural for a lady to be dirty and junky. And here you are talking about how fly you are and how every girl in the world hates you, but you look like you buy clothes before you buy soap. In Detroit, MI, the city and state in which our youth embrace descriptions such as "the murder capitol" and "tha murda mitten", one of the easiest ways to be poor, but not look it, is to sport a pair of Cartier frames. How you purchase these thousand dollar designer frames is of no importance to those who see you. Rather you stole them, borrowed them from your cousin,
have a pair of fakes, and just knocked off a D.O.C., you will undoubtedly get more attention when you are wearing them.
Fakes. Well just go to Ebay and type in "Cartier, wood" and you'll see what the counterfeit black market has to offer. In a land of "show me what you got", fakes have taken over. They give a since of high-class fashion to broke ass people. Ass backwards? Tell me about it. Feel free to enter one of Detroit's mini-malls, where Family Dollar's, Chinese Food restaurant, and the Beauty Supply stores flourish....and you'll bound to hear one of the 3 marketing strategies:
1. "cd's and movies. I got that new American Gangster"
2. "a yo cuz, you smoke? I got that ooooh weeee"
3. "I them yays man, $50, brand new".
Oh wait, throw in someone selling knockoff Air Force 1's and Jordans and now you know you're REALLY in the hood. I'm getting WAY off topic here......
A 17-yr old IDIOT, recently won a pair of Cartier frames on ebay. Congrats. He was setup by a group of young black men from the Detroit area. The winning bidder brought $1,100 in cash to purchase the glasses from men who were anything but professional. Long story short, he was robbed, beat up, and left with this brilliant piece of advice "and don’t meet people you don’t know over the Internet." Oh yea, that's really his problem. This fool could have met a guy on 7 Mile and did the same thing. Don't go blaming "www" for your stupidity. Forget all that, with $1,100, you can go buy a pair of Cartier glasses from a legit retailer. What the heck are you doing shopping on ebay for Yays in YAY CITY? There's a Cartier store in Summerset mall, there are 500 jewelry stores that have them, not to mention good ol' D.O.C. I do not excuse the actions of these thieves, but at some point, I have to question the intelligence of the buyer in this situation. This is not "happyville", where you can just go around smiling without a care in the world.
I too once suffered from "gotta-have-some-yays-itus" in 2003. One year, fresh out of highschool, finishing up my first year @ WSU, I'm fresh to death....with some brand new Cartier Wood frames on my face. One month later, while at a major venue in Downtown Detroit, I was jacked by the infamous "Yay snatchers". I was not armed, but had I been, who can shoot at someone in a crowd of 100,000 people. $800 (through a discount), was down the drain.My story fails in comparison to Lenell Caffey, who was killed outside of a Southfield party store in 2002 for not handing over his Cartier glasses. In September of 2007, two men were approached by 5 dudes in Hamtramck for their Cartier glasses. One of the 2 victims was armed and returned fire at the suspects. They lived....and kept their glasses, but one of the two was shot in his thigh. Even a mailman and an undercover police officer where the victims or potential robberies for their Cartier glasses, in braud daylight.
At some point, people have to ask themselves what do they value more, their lives or these glasses? I value my life, but I will never allow thieves to dictate what I'm willing to wear. I work hard, I play hard, and I pray harder....so if you want to risk your life to steal from me, so be it. If I die in a gun battle over my belongings, so be it. My only concern at that point is rather I'm in Heaven or not, not what I died for, or how I died.

Belleville High School Students Expelled for Myspace Pics
Gun photos get 5 expelled
Five Belleville High School students have been expelled after photos appeared on a social networking Web site that pictured them with what appears to be an assault weapon, rifles, revolvers, drugs and piles of cash.
Two other students were given eight- to 10-day suspensions. Accusations against an eighth student were dismissed.
The photos have also prompted an ongoing police investigation, said Lt. Dennis Brooks of the Van Buren Township Public Safety Department.
One of the photos on the Web site MySpace.com shows several students sitting around a table, apparently in a home, with rifles arranged in a triangle on the table. Other photos show students in a limousine holding revolvers. Another photo shows what looks like an assault rifle and another shows piles of $20 bills.
It is unclear whether the guns, the cash and the possible illegal substance shown in the photos are real but under district rules, having real or look-alike weapons or drugs is grounds for discipline, Van Buren Public Schools Superintendent Pete Lazaroff said.
"I assume they were real,'' Lazaroff said.A concerned parent reported the photos on Oct. 23, Lazaroff said.
Lazaroff said the limousine photos, which were taken after the limo picked up the students from the high school's homecoming dance, led to the discipline of the students.
Because the limousine picked up the students from the dance but had not dropped them off, school officials believe that the students had the revolvers that were in the photo, as well as a small plastic bag containing a green leafy substance, at the school dance, Lazaroff said.
The students who were disciplined bragged that they were in a gang called the M.A.D.E. Squad, Lazaroff said. One message posted on the Web site on Oct. 22 speaks of a rumor that M.A.D.E. Squad and another gang called M.M.B. would have a fight the next day.
Van Buren Officer Ryan Bidwell said this morning that the investigation is continuing.
Bidwell said that the photos showing rifles, revolvers and assault weapons were a concern because they can be seen as a threat to rival gangs, even if the teens in the photos did not intend to make a threat.
Bidwell added that while M.A.D.E. Squad is a recognized gang active in the Detroit area, police are unsure if M.M.B. is an actual gang.
Lazaroff said the district is also continuing to investigate and is asking for cooperation from parents and other adults if they see similar photos or other possible gang activity.Lazaroff said the possibility that gang violence could affect the school was one reason the district took action against the students.
The five expelled students were banned from the school district for the remainder of this school year. Because they were disciplined under district rules rather than state law, the students may be able to attend another public school district in the state, Lazaroff said.

Focused Reflection....
One parent interviewed by Channel 7 in Detroit proudly spoke, "parents should go on all their kids myspace pages and make sure it's safe....so I totally agree, they should be expelled". GIVE ME A BREAK!!! @ 17, I was making websites, I could have made 20 myspace pages and showed my mother whichever one I thought she would think was 'safe', all the while having my balls showing on my main page.
How can you kick a child out of school for pics with some stuff that you don't know anything about. I can put baking soda on a table and buy some air guns and take some pics......now I'm being kicked out of school? Oh yea, really teach me a lesson. These adults we allow to be in charge nowadays are absolutely crazy. Suspend them at the MOST, or just make them remove the photos (even though they will be everywhere very quickly), but taking it this far just shows how scary people really are.
